Kasey Chambers
Wayward Angel

(Warner)

(Best rating is 5 Stars)

Wayward Angel is the aptly named third album by this Aussie import with the expressive childlike voice. Sounding like a Julie Miller/Lucinda Williams/Emmylou Harris hybrid she fares well on the album’s more pop influenced numbers. However Chambers is at her best when she embraces the traditional music she grew up with touring in the Dead Ringer Band with her father Bill Chambers - who plays guitar on Angel - and her older brother Nash - who produced this effort. Hank style steel guitar, dobro and banjo join with solid production to complement her smooth yet gritty vocals and her simple yet beautiful lyrics. She even touches on her new celebrity status in the land down under on Hollywood and For Sale - You can buy my life on the radio, order me by mail, not everything about me is for sale. Hopefully she’s prepared for the same in North America.
