Reeve Dennis Forbes is telling property owners to get a permit before lighting a fire, and cautions if the fire department needs to get involved, the costs associated with it could fall on whoever's responsible.

"Obtain a burning permit. That just lets the fire department know that there is a fire in that particular area and if someone phoned it in, like a passerby on a cell phone, the fire department would respond to that permit and ask, 'Are you okay? Is everything fine?' instead of sending personnel and equipment out."

Forbes says without a permit, equipment and personnel may be sent out and it may be followed by a bill.
