Last night in the Lions Den at the Parkland Recreation Complex, members from the DFC and city council were in attendance for the annual Firefighters Appreciation Evening.

Fire Chief Cam Abrey feels it's important to continue traditions like these because it fosters growth.

"Recruitment and retention are huge issues facing the fire service across North America and with our councils that we work with -- our city and RM here in Dauphin -- they've been putting on this appreciation dinner for as long as I can remember, and it's one of those retention tools... It's recognizing the members that are currently on the fire department and it's important to keep those people because we've invested so much into the training."

A handful of awards were handed out last night recognizing individual firefighters who have served for 5-10 years in the department.
