Music Report Monday, December 8, 2014 SAM SMITH, MEGHAN TRAINOR REACT TO GRAMMY NOMINATIONS Sam Smith says it's just weird for him to see his name next to Beyonce's. They're both up for the album of the year Grammy, along with works by Beck, Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams. Smith says the Recording Academy saying his music is good means they're saying it's a timeless piece of work, which is exactly what he's trying to do. Meghan Trainor, who's up for best new artist, says she keeps crying any time someone says she's a Grammy nominee. She'll compete in that category with Smith, Brandy Clark, Iggy Azalea and HAIM. MUSIC NEWS Thursday, December 4, 2014 IAN McLAGAN OF THE SMALL FACES DIES Faces and Small Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan has died. A statement on his website says he died in Austin, Texas, yesterday after suffering a stroke on Tuesday. He was 69. McLagan joined The Small Faces six months after they formed. Their biggest American hit was ``Itchycoo Park.'' McLagan continued with The Faces and played on their hit, ``Stay With Me.'' After The Faces broke up, McLagan played with The Rolling Stones on the ``Some Girls'' album. He released several solo albums, including ``United States,'' which came out this year. McLagan was supposed to begin a North American tour yesterday. MUSIC NEWS - Wednesday, December 3, 2014 SAX PLAYER BOBBY KEYS DIES The man responsible for the sax solo in ``Brown Sugar'' by The Rolling Stones and ``Whatever Gets You Thru The Night'' by John Lennon has died. Bobby Keys died yesterday after a lengthy illness at his home outside Nashville, according to keyboardist Michael Webb, who played with him. Keys was 70. He also played on albums by George Harrison, Barbra Streisand and Eric Clapton, and had been on tour with the Stones just this year. Bruce Springsteen and Chris Martin of Coldplay filled in for Bono last night, at a New York concert for World AIDS Day. Springsteen performed ``Where the Streets Have No Name'' and ``I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.'' Martin sang ``Beautiful Day'' and ``With or Without You.'' Music Report Bono replacements for NYC concert Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay's Chris Martin will act as Bono at a concert Monday night in New York City. U2 announced on its website that the singers will perform in Times Square alongside Kanye West and Carrie Underwood for ``U2 Minus 1 _ Live in New York Tonight.'' The concert benefits World AIDS Day, which is Monday. Bono was injured in a bike accident in Central Park last month. Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. will perform Monday. ``This year is a World AIDS Day like no other,'' Bono said in a statement. ``The world reached a tipping point in the fight against AIDS.'' The Watson Art Centre was packed Friday night when local country rockers, The Chris Barker Band held a CD release concert to celebrate the official release of their long awaited sophomore release, "Feel the Fire". The album was recorded in Ottawa earlier this year. The Chris Barker Band is Clifford Flett (rhythm guitar), Chris Flett (lead guitar), Curtis Flett (drums), Waylon Lafreniere (bass), Harold Delaronde (Mandolin) and Clifton Flett(guitar & vocals). They were joined by special guest Chris Jewett (keyboards). The evening kicked off with performances from fiddlers Christopher Pinette of Ste. Rose du Lac and Edward Klyne of Dauphin. Christopher's brother played spoons while Curtis, Chris and Clifton Flett backed them up. Then came Dani Hu?, a band featuring Trevor Beals on drums, Cam Bennett on bass, Andrew Coombs on lead guitar and vocals and CBB's Clifton Flett on vocals and lead guitar.
