MPI - "Keep Your Eyes On The Road"
Manitoba Public Insurance is reminding motorists to keep their eyes on the roads.
An average of 25 Manitobans are killed because of distracted driving every year, according to MPI data.
Brian Smiley from MPI says there is a simple message they want to get out to motorists:
"The message would be that texting and driving, or distracted driving, is a very high risk driving behaviour, and for people to think twice before they do it. It's against the law in Manitoba. There is consequences financially, in terms of losing possible discounts on your Autopac insurance. If you feel the need to text while you drive, pull over safely onto the shoulder of the road, put on your four way flashers, put the vehicle into park and then you can do your texting if you have to."
Manitobans convicted of using handheld devices while driving will receive two demerit points, in addition to a $200 fine.
