Manitoba SWAT Workshop Coming To Dauphin

A group that has students educating their peers about the dangers of tobacco use will be holding a workshop in Dauphin at the end of this month.

Manitoba Students Working Against Tobacco will have a workshop for schools interested in starting SWAT teams on April 28 at the Dauphin Friendship Centre.

Barbara Tascona, facilitator for SWAT, says the group has a simple model for schools to follow.

"It's based on the premise that if tobacco companies can go out and actively recruit new smokers, then we can go out an actively recruit kids to be anti-tobacco activists. This is all based on no judging, because we all acknowledge that smoking is an addiction, and we're looking at trying to speak to students before the uptake of smoking."

The DRCSS and the Ochre River School are the only schools in the Mountain View School Division that have SWAT teams established.

Tascona says they're looking to get more teams started in Northern and Western Manitoba.
