Two Fires Near Steinbach, Thousands Of Pigs Die

Thousands of hogs died in one of two fires near Steinbach today.
 
RCMP responded to a hog barn fire five kilometres south of Highway 1 in the RM of Ste. Anne around 12:45 this afternoon. When officers arrived, the barn was fully engulfed in flames. It is believed there were about 3,000 hogs in the barn and it appears all perished. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
 
RCMP also responded to a grass fire about 1.5 kilometres south of Steinbach just after 1pm. Police say about 15 homes were evacuated as a precaution, but everyone has since been allowed back home.
 
Both fires were extinguished around 3:30. Fire crews remain at both scenes and the investigation continues.
