Soil Temperatures Important For Seeding Canola

Checking soil temperatures will be important for farmers who are set to start seeding canola.

According to Angela Brackenreed, an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada, farmers should be checking the temperatures at the depth they are seeding to.

"For canola, you want to be taking that temperature at half an inch to an inch deep. If you're using a probe thermometer, the way that you can do that and ensure that you're getting that temperature at the right depth is to dig a little bit of a trench and put that probe in sideways."

Brackenreed says the soil temperature should be at least 10 C for planting canola, and the temperatures should be measured from multiple readings across three days.
