Gordon Lightfoot

Gordon Lightfoot is digging into the archives to give listeners his first unreleased track in 12 years.

The ``If You Could Read My Mind'' singer announced Wednesday that ``Plans of My Own'' will arrive at digital retailers and streaming music services on Nov. 18.

The song was recorded in 2001 and ``showcases Lightfoot on his signature 12 string guitar and singing at his best,'' his record label said.

Lightfoot is plowing through a number of U.S. tour dates this month before a series of Ontario shows in November. The cities include Chatham, Kitchener, Belleville and Ottawa.

He'll also continue his annual tradition of a run of shows at Toronto's Massey Hall from Nov. 23 to 26.

Prom Rape Song

A Prince Edward Island-based artist is hoping a song she wrote that about being raped encourages other women to tell their stories and speak out against their assailants.

Kinley Dowling says Microphone is her favourite song from her debut album Letters Never Sent because it has helped her deal with a traumatizing incident of sexual assault she has carried with her for 15 years.

Dowling, who has played violin for Newfoundland indie ensemble Hey Rosetta! for nine years, says writing a song about her experience helped her work through those difficult emotions.

She says she's already receive many messages from people who say her song inspired them to open up about their own sexual assault experiences for the first time.

Dowling said she sent the song to her teenage assailant in an email, but she has not received a response.

The unnamed perpetrator is not the only recipient of a musical letter from Dowling.

Each song on her new album is a letter to someone, or something, different.

The song Golden Days, for example, is a letter to her favourite place in Prince Edward Island: Lakeside Beach.

THE STRUMBELLAS DUKE IT OUT IN VIDEO FOR "WE DON'T KNOW"

The Strumbellas originally had come up with a sad concept for the video for their new single, "We Don't Know."  Singer-guitarist Jon Hembrey says it just didn't work.  He suggested they recreate their favourite fighting characters from 1990s video games and "beat each other up."  Singer-guitarist Simon Ward says that song was a natural choice as a single because it's the band's favourite off their "Hope" album.  He says it's weird and fun, and it's a different sound for them.

LIST OF PRINCE HEIRS PARED DOWN

A Minnesota judge says a woman and girl who claim to be Prince's niece and grandniece will not be considered heirs of his estate.  Judge Kevin Eide (EYE'-dee) has ruled that Brianna Nelson and her niece, Victoria Nelson, are excluded as Prince's heirs as a matter of law.  The two claim that they descended from Duane Nelson Sr -- someone they say was a half-brother to Prince.  However court documents indicate Prince's father wasn't Duane Nelson's biological dad.  The link to kinship was challenged by Prince's sister and others who have a direct blood link to the musician.  The decision represents no small potatoes, either; Prince's estate is worth between 100 and 300 million dollars.
