Ste. Rose's Hopfner Having Success Early on With Rangers

17-year-old Reece Hopfner is in the midst of his final season as a Midget AAA hockey player with the Parkland Rangers, and it's been a good one so far.

In 9 games, the Rangers are 6-3, and Hopfner is third in team scoring with 11 points, which is just two behind the team lead.

"It's been a pretty good start to the season," said Hopfner. "My line has been doing pretty well, we've been generating a lot offensively, and not allowing much defensively."

Over the weekend, the Rangers took on the Winnipeg Bruins, who are on top of the Midget AAA standings with an 8-0-1 record, good enough for 17 points and the Rangers fell short, 5-2.

"I think we played really well in that game," said Hopfner. "They're not known as one of the best teams in the league for nothing. I don't think they're any better than us. We got into some penalty trouble, and that's what ended up costing us."

Hopfner and the rest of the Rangers have high expectations for this season, having 11, 17-year-old players on the roster.

"This is a really promising group that we have," said Hopfner. "All of the players and coaching staff expect a lot. We want to push to get a top-four spot heading into playoffs."

The Rangers will look to win their seventh game of the season on Wednesday when they head to Brandon to take on the Wheat Kings, who beat the Rangers 4-0 in the season opener.

"We know that they're a good team," said Hopfner. "They have really good goaltending as well, but they dropped a game against the Thrashers over the weekend, and the Thrashers have a poor record so that just shows that anyone can beat anyone. We're just going to go in and play the way we can."

Puck drop in the Wheat City on Wednesday is set for 7:30 p.m.
