“We’ve had a pretty good start to the year,” said David Anning, Head Coach of the Wheat Kings. “We have a lot of new faces in the lineup, and some younger guys. But they’ve really found their way so far in the WHL, and we have a great leadership group which has helped that. “
Heading into this weekend’s action, the Wheat Kings have 63 goals, which is second in the Eastern Conference, and tied for third league-wide.
“Going into the season, we weren’t sure how easy goals would come by,” said Anning. “We’ve had some good depth up and down the lineup, and we’ve been able to score some timely goals this season so far, so yeah, we’re definitely happy with where we’re at so far.”
A huge reason why the Wheat Kings are having success is Kale Clague.
“He’s been excellent for us,” said Anning. “He’s one of, if not the best defender in the WHL, and CHL for that matter. Right now, he’s playing exactly how he was when we drafted him in bantam. He’s an elite player on the back end, and offensively."
This past weekend, the Wheat Kings hit the road for two games in Saskatchewan against Prince Albert and Saskatoon, and they returned with no points and were outscored 8-2.
“We had a tough trip in two tough buildings to play in,” said Anning. “I think overall you can’t fault our effort, but up and down the lineup, some performances have to get better. “
Now, the Wheat Kings are back in Brandon to welcome the Kootenay Ice this weekend for two games.
“We didn’t have a lot of quality shots last week, so we didn’t score as much as we’d like to,” said Anning. “That’ll be the focus this week. Just getting back to the inside, paying attention to detail, and keeping our pace up throughout the game.”
If you’re heading to the games this weekend in Brandon, you’ll hear a familiar voice, as CKDM’s own, Al Gaines will be the Public Address Announcer for both Friday and Saturday’s game.
