Sports Notes - Tuesday February 18th

A one game evening in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, plus lots going on at the Olympics in Russia!

The Virden Oil Capitals will try to crawl a little closer to the Dauphin Kings atop the MJHL's Sher-Wood Division when they host the Swan Valley Stampeders at 7:30. Virden is nine points back and have two games in hand. The Kings are off until Friday when they hit the road and skate with the Selkirk Steelers. If you missed it yesterday Dauphin Kings Forward Brent Wold was named the MJHL's Player of the Week. He had three goals and five assists in five games after coming back from a long term injury.

At the Olympics... The women's short-track relay team picked up Canada's eighth silver medal, and 16th overall, today by finishing second in the three-thousand final. The Canadians appeared to have a third-place finish, but they moved up a notch when the Chinese team was disqualified.

Canadian Hockey fans are keeping an eye on today's game between Switzerland and Latvia. The winner will move on to battle Canada's Men's team tomorrow morning. Earlier today Russia gained a spot in the quarter finals by sliding past Norway 4-0 and Slovenia did the same, beating Austria 4-0 as well.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman stepped before the microphones in Sochi today and the key question he faced was whether NHL would compete in the next Winter Games in South Korea in four years. But Bettman said no decision has yet been made and there won't be any discussions until after the Sochi Games are complete.
