Wednesday Sports Notes

After snapping their losing streak over the weekend the Brandon Wheat Kings will try to keep the ball rolling tonight when they entertain the Lethbridge Hurricanes. With a goal this evening Grandview's Ryan Pulock will pass Brad McCrimmon's franchise record which is currently set at 61 for defencemen. The Wheat Kings are currently seventh in the WHL's Eastern Conference, four points inside the playoff picture.

A two game night in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League sees three Addison Division teams and one Sher-Wood in action. In Steinbach the Pistons host the Waywayseecappo Wolverines while the Selkirk Steelers visit the Portage Terriers. The Dauphin Kings are off until Friday when play in Neepawa against the Natives. You can hear the contest on CKDM starting at 7:30.

The Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks are both back to work tonight as the NHL season resumes in earnest. The Habs are looking to extend a three-game winning streak when they welcome the Detroit Red Wings. The Canucks, meantime, are hoping to get back on track after losing 16 of their last 20. They face the St. Louis Blues. The Winnipeg Jets return to action tomorrow when they entertain Phoenix.

The Buffalo Sabres may be close to removing the interim tag from head coach Ted Nolan's title. Generam manager Tim Murray says he's had discussions with Nolan about keeping him on as the team's full-time coach beyond this season. Nolan is back for a second stint in Buffalo after being hired as the team's interim coach in November, when coach Ron Rolston and general manager Darcy Regier were fired.

It's a happy day for baseball fans as the spring exhibition season gets underway. The Toronto Blue Jays open their Grapefruit League season against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, Florida. J.A. Happ gets the start for the Jays, who are looking to rebound after a disappointing 2013 season.

The Dauphin Rec Hockey League is back on Credit Union Place ice tonight. At 8:15 Dauphin Vet Clinic battles Dauphin Co-op Agro, then at 9:30 Hometown Auto Glass and Source for Sports go head to head.
