Thursday Sports Notes

The Masters Men's Provincial Curling Championship is underway in Winnipeg. Dauphin's Russell Murray is there and he'll play two games today. First against Brandon's Lory Saban and then later on against Keith Mcleod of Springfield. The round robin for the tournament goes until Sunday. Listen to CKDM for updates!

With a win tonight in Brandon the Dauphin Clippers will advance to High School Hockey Provincials in Winnipeg next month. Dauphin faces the Vincent Massey Vikings in game two of the best of three series. Face off is at 8 o'clock. If a third and deciding game is needed it will be tomorrow night in Dauphin.

The North Central Hockey League playoffs continue tonight with game one of the semi final series between the Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks and Bombers in Minnedosa. The Grandview Comets and Russell Rams begin their best of five series on Saturday.

Lots going on in the NHL tonight including the Winnipeg Jets getting back to work after the Olympic break. They'll look to continue their impressive run under coach Paul Maurice when they host Phoenix. The Jets are 9-3-1 since Maurice took over from Claude Noel.Twelve games on the ice, including Toronto at the New York Islanders, Ottawa hosting Detroit, Montreal in Pittsburgh, Calgary taking on the L-A Kings and Edmonton at home to Minnesota.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia meet for the second day in a row in Florida. The Blue Jays are coming off a 4-3, rain-shortened win over the Phillies to kick off their spring training schedule. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey will start for the Jays against Cliff Lee.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has given a Mercedes-Benz to each Olympic medallist from the host country. After an embarrassing sixth-place finish at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Russia finished atop the medal standings at the Sochi Games. Medvedev said it's important for the government to continue supporting athletes financially.
