Friday Sports Notes

Hockey Provincials carry on this weekend across Manitoba and a handful of local teams are in play. At the Male Peewee Rural 'AA' event in Swan River Dauphin has two round robin games. First against The Pas and then against Lorette. In McCreary it's the Male Peewee Rural 'D' tournament. The host take on Brandon while Grand Plains battles Yellowhead. Both McCreary and Grand Plains will face off later tonight. Finally in Gladstone it's the Male Midget Rural 'C' event. Ste Rose is there, they'll skate with Swan Lake later this evening. Listen to CKDM all weekend for updates on Hockey Provincials!

It's the second to last day at the Manitoba Winter Games in Morden and Winkler. Parkland's Female Hockey team concludes the round robin against Interlake this afternoon. Following that the playoffs get underway. Curling Mixed Doubles has Parkland in action two times today. First against Team Central, then later they'll throw the rocks with Winnipeg Gold. Also on tap is Badminton, it continues all day. A handful of Parkland athletes in the mix including Dauphin's Avery Thacker, Ethan Thacker, Jonathan Kohan, Jake Wiens and Steven Zurba. Coming into the day Parkland sits with three medals at the Manitoba Winter Games, all are bronze. Leading the way is Winnipeg Gold with 48.

It's do or die tonight for the Westman High School Hockey League's Dauphin Clippers. They're on the edge of being eliminated from the playoffs following an 8-4 loss on the road Sunday against the Major Pratt Trojans in the best of three Semi Final Series. Head Coach Rick Freese says they've made some changes ahead of tonight's battle at Credit Union Place, noting over the past few season's Dauphin's record at home has been very good in the playoffs and he chalks it up to one specific thing that helps his team get over the hump. Good support. The Clippers will look for that tonight in the do or die situation. Game two of the best of three series happens at Credit Union Place with opening face off at 7:30. If a third and deciding game is needed it'll go Sunday afternoon in Russell.

The Dauphin Kings will know who they'll face in the Sher-Wood Division Semi Final by the end of tonight. The OCN Blizzard host the Wayway Wolverines in the third and deciding game of their survivor series. Meanwhile, the Addison Division Semi Final Series between the Terriers and Pistons gets going in Steinbach this evening. The Dauphin Kings begin their best of seven set at home on Sunday.

A couple local curling groups are in Carman to take part in berth bonspiels this weekend. Dauphin's Ray Baker hits the ice this afternoon in the Safeway Berth Bonspiel while Lisa Menard goes to work in the Scotties Berth Bonspiel. Both teams begin their tournaments at 3:30.

Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton will likely play in tonight's one-versus-two playoff game at the Tim Hortons Brier. Stoughton is currently awaiting the conclusion of the round robin today before he knows where he'll finish in the overall standings. Manitoba has a record of 9-2 at the men's national tournament.

The Brandon Wheat Kings will try to avoid their third straight loss tonight when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings. Brandon is currently just four points inside the WHL's Eastern Conference playoff picture with five games left in their season.

Roberto Luongo is expected to be in goal when the Florida Panthers face the Buffalo Sabres. The Panthers re-acquired Luongo earlier this week from the Vancouver Canucks. It's one of five games on the ice, including Calgary home to the New York Islanders.
