Monday Sports Notes

Local Curler Peter Prokopowich and Team Manitoba continue round robin play today the National Seniors Curling Championship in Yellowknife. The group skipped by Neepawa's Kelly Robertson has two games on their docket. First they're on the ice against Prince Edward Island's Ted Macfadyen, then later on this afternoon Manitoba meets up with team Nova Scotia skipped by Alan O'Leary. Coming into the day Manitoba's record is 2-1.

After taking the opening game of the Sher-Wood Division Final the Dauphin Kings practice today in anticipation of game two tomorrow night in Virden. You can hear the contest on CKDM starting at 7:10pm with the Pre Game Show. Tickets for game three of the series on Thursday in Dauphin are on sale tomorrow starting at 11:00am at the Credit Union Place South Ticket Office.

With their playoff hopes fading the Winnipeg Jets look for a key two points tonight when they visit the Dallas Stars. The Jets are six points out of the post season with 10 games left in their season. Three other Canadian clubs on the ice tonight as well, Montreal is in Boston, Ottawa goes to Tampa Bay and Calgary hosts San Jose.

March Madness will resume later this week. Play in the regional semifinals starts Thursday in Memphis and Anaheim. Games will also be played Friday in New York and Indianapolis. The Wichita State Shockers are out. They suffered their only loss of the season yesterday when they were stopped by Kentucky 78-76.

The NFL spring meetings are taking place this week in Orlando and the league owners are considering several possible rule changes. A total of 13 rule proposals will be examined along with seven bylaws. Owners will also discuss the possibility of expanding the playoff field from 12 to 14 teams.

50 years ago, today, the Dauphin Kings and Portage Terriers hooked up in the first MJHL game, and 50 years later, the venue may have changed, but the rivalry continues as the two will square off tonight at Credit Union Place.
