DRCSS Classrooms to Get More Windows

Mountain View School Division is committing up to half a million dollars to bring more natural light into Dauphin's high school.

The Division gave its support last night for the DRCSS curtain wall project, which would add windows to the classrooms, to allow sun light from the exterior windows to come in.

Superintendent Donna Davidson says natural light has many benefits for students.

"Research is showing us that natural light is important to student learning and student well-being, so we're hopeful that by investing the extra dollars into creating lights into the classroom it will support student's well-being and ultimately enhance their achievement."

The project is estimated to cost between $400-500,000, but Davidson says after provincial grants, it would likely only cost the division around $200-250,000.

Kathy Gale of Roblin is this year's recipient of a scholarship from McMunn and Yates building supplies in Dauphin, and was presented $465.

A scholarship committee decides which student receives the award, based on grades, financial need, and whether the student plans to stay and work in the area after graduation.

Carpentry and Woodworking students at ACC Parkland are now looking for employment for their 120-hour work experience this May. All eight students in the program plan to continue on as apprentice carpenters through the Apprenticeship Manitoba structure.

Winnipeg Firefighters Injured During Rescue

A Winnipeg fire captain says he had no choice but to send four firefighters into a massive blaze on the weekend in order to rescue two sisters trapped in their house.

Captain Rob Labossiere told a news conference yesterday that firefighters know that risking their lives is part of the job.

The rescue operation was successful but all four men were injured, three of them with second-degree burns to their faces.

The firefighters and the sisters, one of whom uses a wheelchair, were taken to hospital for treatment. The men have since been released and the women are recovering from burns and scrapes.
