Manitoba Government and General Employees Union president Michelle Gawronsky says she hopes the review is done quickly and comes to the conclusion that the jail needs to be built.

"We've got major concerns, with Dauphin especially -- overcrowding across the province is huge. They're sitting at about 120 per cent capacity at any one given jail at any time right now. That's huge health and safety issues for our members as well as for the inmates."

The subject came up at Question Period in the Legislature on Monday, when NDP MLA Andrew Swan asked if construction of the facility would proceed as planned.

A government spokesperson says the province is actively reviewing all capital projects and the Dauphin correctional centre is progressing through the design phase while the review is completed.

Correction: this story previously said that MLA Andrew Swan asked his question about the correctional centre last Friday, but in fact he asked it this Monday.
