Liam Chartrand scored twice on Saturday afternoon as the Clippers hockey team continued to roll.

Following a win on Friday, Dauphin downed Virden, 5-2 on Saturday.

Allee Hrechka also scored for Dauphin as did Logan Chapman and Linden Smigelsky.

The Dauphin Clippers football team will play for a championship in the Rural Manitoba Football League.

The Clippers used a dominant defensive performance to down SouthWest, 25-12, on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Zurba had nine tackles, one knock down and one forced fumble while Joseph Lopez also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Damon Nepinak had three tackles, two assists, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two blocked field goal attempts.

On the offensive side of the ball, Zurba ran for 44 yards on 13 carries. Lopez had a five yard rushing touchdown and a 35 yard interception that he ran back for a touchdown. Thomas Scott hooked up with Scott Gower for a beautiful 70 yard touchdown. Austen Semchyshyn also had an interception that led to a 50 yard touchdown.

The Clippers will play either Swan Valley or Neepawa in the finals.

The Dauphin Clippers hockey team scored first and they never looked back on Friday night.

Playing the REMP Renegades, the Clippers scored six times in the final two periods in a 7-2 win.

Matthew Zurba led the way for Dauphin with two goals.

Jake Kuzmiak, Liam Chartrand, Cole Delamare, Logan Chapman, and Parker Boguski all scored for Dauphin in the win.

The Dauphin Kings are tied for first-place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League after winning a thriller on Friday night.

Mathew Rathbone scored just more than 2:30 into overtime as the Kings skated off with a 2-1 win against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

The win gives Dauphin their 12th win and they’re now three points ahead of Wayway for first in the West. They’re also tied with Steinbach for first place.

Nick Braun opened the scoring for Dauphin in the second as he scored a goal for the third straight game. However, Waywayseecappo tied it later in the period while on the man advantage.

Both Carson Cherepak and Liam Tereposky stole the show in the third period as both goaltenders made some tremendous saves.

In the end, Rathbone scored his sixth goal of the season in overtime as Dauphin skated off with a thrilling win.

These same two teams will meet on Saturday in Dauphin.

King Tips:

  • Dauphin won their fourth straight game
  • Carson Cherepak was once again great for Dauphin as he won his 10th game and he made 33 saves
  • Braun earned his sixth goal of the season
  • Dauphin is now 6-2 on the road this season
  • Tereposky was also solid for Wayway, making 35 saves in the defeat.

The Parkland U15 Rangers are preparing to return to the ice on Sunday as they'll play at Credit Union Place for the first time this season.

Entering the contest at 5-1-2, the Rangers welcome the Winnipeg Wild Green to town and they're 3-3. And when the Rangers hit the ice, they will show off their leadership group for the first time.

Sam Swanton has been named the team's captain. Sam played with the team last season and had one goal. This year he has one goal and four assists.

"It's a great feeling for me, I love to be a leader on the ice and off as well," said Swanton. "I think it's going to be a great experience."

Joining Sam on the leadership group are Tavyn Boychuk, Ryan Gower, and Luke Myhre. The three have been named alternate captains.

"They're all really intense and they love the intensity of our games," said Swanton. "They are always working so hard and they will do great as leaders."

Off to their solid start, Sunday's home game is the final of their four-game homestand. After Sunday, the Rangers head on the road for four games. Swanton says the team is looking forward to getting back on the ice this Sunday.

"We're off to a solid start and we just want to keep getting better," said Swanton. "We have a great group of guys."

Aiden Ziprick is just 15-years-old and that makes him the youngest player in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. You would expect that he would play a minimal role; however, that's not the case at all.

Playing his first year of junior with the Waywaysecappo Wolverines, Aiden has played solid minutes all season long and has even seen time on both the powerplay and penalty kill. Growing up in Russell, Aiden spent many weekend evenings at the Arena Complex watching the Wolverines play and now, he gets to live his childhood dream of playing for them.

"It's a pretty special feeling, I've wanted to play with this team ever since I was just a really young kid," said Ziprick. "Taylor and Josh have helped me a lot, especially when I've struggled. It's a great organization and I'm really proud to say that I'm a Wolverine, it's a dream come true."

Back in the 2019-20 season while with the Parkland U15 Rangers, Aiden was an all-star as he scored 14 goals and had 33 assists in just 36 games. He then moved to Winnipeg last season; however, it was very short-lived as the season was cancelled very early on because of the pandemic.

And now, he's right back home. Playing with the Wolverines, Aiden gets to stay at home with his mom, dad, and brother, which is a great feeling in itself.

"Yeah, it's certainly a good feeling to be back home and I don't have to travel far to practice or play games," said Ziprick. "My mom and dad have supported me and done everything for me since the start and my brother, he's always there for me as well. It's just a great setup and I'm really happy that I came to play here."

On a fun note while we talk about his family, Aiden's brother, Keaton won his first MJHL game with the Kings at the Arena Complex, where Aiden now calls his home. The 15-year-old has played nine games with Waywayseecappo this season, registering three assists. He knows he has plenty to prove but he is feeling more comfortable every single day.

"I believe I've done a pretty good job of helping this team win," said Ziprick. "We have a great group and I'm just trying to fit in the best I can and I'm pretty happy with how it's going."

Aiden's back on the ice on Friday as his Wolverines open a home-and-home against the Kings at the Arena Complex. At 10-4, Wayway enters the contest two points behind Dauphin after they dropped both games last weekend.

The Wolverines have scored a league-best 68 goals this season and there's no doubt that Aiden will score his first MJHL goal sooner rather than later. He already knows how to score at the junior level as he scored a game-winning tally at Lethbridge Hurricanes camp before reporting to Waywayseecappo.

Ziprick had this to say on playing Dauphin again.

"They're a fast hockey team and they're well structured," said Ziprick. "With that said, I don't think we played our best hockey, we need to step up. We've been working hard here this week and we're looking forward to getting back on the ice."

Aiden and the Wolverines will then come to Dauphin for a rematch on Sunday night at 7:30.

The Dauphin Kings open up another home-and-home with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Friday night in a season series that is now being billed as a battle of the best in the West.

Dauphin will enter Friday's contest in first place in the West Division as they've won three straight games, including two straight against the Wolverines. Last weekend, Dauphin outscored the Wolverines, 10-4 and the team's special teams were a big reason why. Dauphin went 4-for-9 over the two games and the team's now 32.7% on the power play, the best in the league. Dauphin's penalty kill of 87.1% is also near the top of the league.

The Kings are 11-3 for 22 points while the Wolverines are two points back at 10-4. Friday's contest will be played at the Arena Complex while the two teams will return to Credit Union Place on Saturday night.

Nick Braun’s friend gave him a big winter park and he’s certainly happy about that because although this is his first winter in Dauphin, he knows what is coming.

From West Vancouver, BC, this winter will be Braun’s first experience of waking up consistently and it being minus 30. But he’s okay with that because, at the end of the day, he’s getting the chance to play the game he loves with a great organization and one that is ranked 12th in Canada.

Braun is in his first year with the Kings after scoring twice and adding one assist in just five games last year with the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. And the first-year King is coming off his best weekend of the year and he’s certainly looking to build off of that.

In two games against Waywayseecappo last weekend, Braun scored three times. Two of the goals came on Friday in a 4-2 win and he also notched the game-winner. He would then score once more one day later as Dauphin rolled all over Wayway. Braun now has five goals and five assists in 13 games.

“Scoring those three goals this past weekend couldn’t have come at a better time for me,” said Braun. “I’m feeling pretty good about where my game is at right now and most importantly, I’m just happy that I was able to help the team win.”

Dauphin enters Friday’s first game of a home-and-home with the Wolverines at 11-3. That has them in first place in the MJHL’s West Division.  It’ll be the third meeting of the season between the two teams.

“They’re going to come at us with everything they have,” offered Braun. “We have to be prepared and make sure we play with the same energy that they will.”

A big Star Wars fan, Braun says this year’s group has done a great job coming together as they have done various team-building events throughout the season so far.

Emma Jensen has assembled a foursome this year that is dominating the Manitoba Junior Curling Tour scene. Playing alongside Jaycee Terrick, Rebecca Friesen and Julia Milan, the foursome has won two titles this season already.

And those titles came in back-to-back weeks. To start their season, the foursome played in the Heather MJCT event and they ran the table. In the round-robin, they won all four games and outscored their opponents, 33-7. Two steals of two in their semi-final advanced them to the finals. In the finals, the foursome scored three in the seventh end and never looked back in a 6-5 win.

Then the following week, the team played in the Swan River MJCT. They went 4-1 in the round-robin and scored 38 points, 28 of which came in just two games. They would go on to win their semifinal and final as they completed another great tournament with a first-place finish, their second in a two-week span.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves last year knowing our time as junior players wasn't going to last that much longer but we shouldn't have," said Jensen. "We just went into those bonspiels ready to go. We communicated great and made the shots that were needed."

Next up for the team is their biggest bonspiel of the season so far, the Junior Women's 2022 World Qualifier which starts on Friday. The winning foursome in the six-team field will represent Manitoba at the national championships, with the winner of that event representing Canada at the 2022 World Junior Championship.

Playing extremely well, Emma is looking forward to getting back on the ice with her team this season.

"Winning those two tournaments just helps us in the long run, knowing that we're playing so well," said Jensen. "It's a great feeling and we can't wait to get back on the ice this weekend, it's going to be some great competition."
