Clippers Hoops Impress against Province's Top Teams

The Dauphin Clippers basketball team put together another hard working weekend on the court.

In Winnipeg for the Nelson McIntyre tournament, Dauphin opened up their tournament by hammering Tec Voc, 107-66. Nick Hudyma had another monster game as he recorded 43 points, four assists, and four steals. Ronin Mouck also put together a great performance with 21 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and a single block. Rounding out the dominating win was a great performance from Josiah Seale as he had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Seale also had five assists and four steals.

In the team's next game, Dauphin went up against the top-ranked AAA team in the province in St. John's Ravenscourt. Dauphin lost a hard fought battle, 86-72. Nick Hudyma had 26 points and three assists while Ronin Mouck racked up 24 points to go along with seven assists and four steals. Chase Kunza also filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Dauphin then came up short in the third place match against Linden Christian, 63-50. They are the eighth ranked AAA team in Manitoba. Ronin Mouck had 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Gabe Calso had five points and five rebounds while Nick Hudyma led the way with 22 points and five steals.

Dauphin has now returned home and they will host their Clippers Classic on Friday and Saturday at the DRCSS.

What a night it was and what a win it was for the Parkland U18 Rangers.

More than 1400 fans packed the stands for Ukrainian Night at Credit Union Place and fans had a lot to cheer about.

As Parkland hunts for a playoff spot, they picked up two critical points in a 5-4 win against the Interlake Lightning.

The Rangers found themselves down 3-2 late in the second period before they caught fire with three goals in the final five minutes of the frame and they scored four goals overall in the second.

Interlake scored once in the third, but the Rangers held on the rest of the way in the victory to earn two big points.

Chase Glover was outstanding for Parkland as he made 48 saves to record the win while five different Rangers scored.

They included Quinten Fisk, Tavyn Boychuk, Cam Sarna, Hayden Seib, and Ethan Carnegie.

Parkland will go for a weekend sweep on Sunday and Darnell Duff will have the call beginning at 1:15.

It wasn't pretty at all times but it was two points the Dauphin Kings needed, and two points is what they racked up on Saturday.

Wrapping up their weekend playing the Freeze, Dauphin found their stride late as they ended up easily skating past Winnipeg, 6-1.

It was a win that saw Dauphin salvage their weekend after losing to Winkler on Friday.

A highlight of the game was Sheldon Shyiak who scored his first MJHL goal late in the contest and Madden Murray opened up the scoring.

Gabriel Bugeaud, Jordan Bax, Rylan Gibbs, and Joshua Schmidt also scored for Dauphin in the win as they improved to 25-13-1 on the season. They're still three points back of the Blizzard for second in the West; however, Dauphin has three games in hand.

The Dauphin Clippers gave up a late goal on Friday, but they still won.

On home ice, the Clippers downed Boissevain, 6-5, to win their 19th game of the season.

Julien Lopez had the hot stick as he recorded a hat trick for Dauphin in the win.

Scoring a goal apiece was Tyron Sweetman, Jackson Buchanan, and Layne Wolfenden.

The Clippers have won 19 of their 26 games this year in league play.

The Dauphin Kings pushed just about as hard as you can possibly push on Friday night and they almost pulled off the unthinkable; however, it wasn't mean to be.

Down by three goals with just five minutes left, Dauphin brought the game within a single goal with 74 seconds left, but it wasn't to be.

Winkler held on to down the Kings 3-2 on Friday night in the team's final game of the regular season against eachother. With the victory, the Flyers beat the Kings in three of four meetings.

Cayden Glover scored Dauphin's lone power play goal of the game with five minutes left as he let go a snipe from the left circle that went up and over the shoulder of Malachi Klassen.

Then with 74 seconds left, Logan Walker pounced on a puck in the blue paint and potted it past Klassen to bring the Kings within one and that set things up for quite the finish. Ultimately, Dauphin was unable to score the equalizer as they fell for just the second time in 2024.

With the loss, the Kings dropped to 24-13-1, but they're still just three poiints back of the Blizzard for second in the West after they lost to Steinbach on Friday night. The Flyers remain three points back of Steinbach for first overall in the league.

Dauphin will now head to Winnipeg to play the Freeze on Saturday night at 7:30 before returning home for a tilt with Neepawa on Tuesday.

In a dazzling display throughout January, Cole Sheffield illuminated the rink with three shutouts in just eight starts, stopping an impressive 231 out of 244 shots.

Sheffield's dynamic skills played a crucial role in propelling the Kings to a remarkable 8-1 record for the month, securing victories against formidable division leaders Virden and Steinbach.

The 2004-born goaltender currently claims the 3rd spot in total wins (20), holds the 6th position in goals against average (2.34), ranks 7th in save percentage (.916), and stands impressively at 3rd in total minutes played (1746).

Sheffield will be back on the ice Friday when Dauphin opens a weekend road trip in Winkler going up against the Flyers. Dauphin enters the game just three points back of the Blizzard with three games in hand.

On Thursday, Canadian defensive backs Nick and Noah Hallett agreed to contract extensions with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The brothers were eligible to become free agents on February 13. Nick Hallett's extension is for two years while Noah Hallett's deal covers the 2024 season.

Nick Hallett returns to Winnipeg for a fifth season. The five-foot-11, 202-pound native of London, Ont., hasn't missed a game with the club since being selected in the 2019 CFL draft, a span of 68 regular-season contests and nine playoff games — including four Grey Cups.

He led Winnipeg with 20 special-teams tackles last season, the third-most in the CFL.

Noah Hallett embarks on his fourth season with Winnipeg but missed all of 2023 due to a knee injury.

He became a legend in Winnipeg and he's heading back to Manitoba's capital.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with quarterback Chris Streveler. Chris returns to Winnipeg after spending the last four seasons in the National Football League, playing nine regular season games.

Joining the team in 2018 for the first time, Streveler threw for 11 touchdowns in his first season in Winnipeg while rushing for 10. He became the first Winnipeg quarterback since Matt Dunigan to hit double-digit touchdown totals through the air and on the ground.

Streveler started 12 games for Winnipeg in 2018 and 2019, throwing for 2,698 yards to go along with 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He rushed for 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns.

The Yorkton Terriers became a member of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) in 1972. They then went on to win their first league championship in 1983.

Their most recent championship in Saskatchewan came in 2014, a year they also won the Western Canada Cup and Royal Bank Cup, which is now known as the Centennial Cup, Canada's Junior A National Championship.

Today, more than 50 years after joining the SJHL, Yorkton remains a member club in the league; however, the future of the team is uncertain at this point. In a recent release to the public, Yorkton outlined its financial struggles, and while many Junior A teams struggle on a financial basis year by year, Yorkton's struggles could ultimately cost the team their spot in the Saskatchewan circuit.

"We have no money, it's as simple as that and we aren't going to be able to pay bills," said Corvyn Neufeld, the team's president. "If something doesn't change significantly, we may not even be able to finish the current season. It was a hard realization for our board to come to and we felt our community needed to know."

Yorkton has struggled to get stands in the building in recent years which is something that has Corvyn baffled.

"I'm a hockey fan so it's hard for me to understand why people don't want to be in the stands and enjoying themselves," said Neufeld. "We had a tough start, but we have been very solid since Christmas and we're in a heated playoff push. Junior hockey is fast-paced and it's very exciting."

As the organization looks to fill the seats moving forward, they have started a campaign called "Save the Terriers". This campaign is to sell season seasons for the 2024-25 season, a season that is promised to be another exciting one in Yorkton. Single tickets cost just $200 for the entire season while a family pack (consisting of two adults and two youths) goes for just $400. If you purchase your ticket throughout February, you will be in a draw for a $4,000.00 travel voucher and the draw for that will take place on March 1.

"I just can't imagine our community without this organization, we have been here for more than 50 years," offered Neufeld. "Many alumni have stayed, started families, and started businesses here. I hope people will step up to get some season tickets and support us for the remainder of this season as well, it's going to be a very exciting stretch run."

Corvyn is also welcoming you down to the rink if you're in Dauphin and surrounding areas.

"We would love to see some of our Manitoba neighbours in the crowd, so come on down," ended Neufeld.

Tavyn Boychuk came up clutch on Tuesday and sent home hundreds of fans home happy at Credit Union Place.

In an important game against the Yellowhead Chiefs, Boychuk outlasted the Yellowhead netminder and pocketed the game-winner as Parkland came from behind to beat their rivals, 4-3, in an overtime thriller.

The Rangers were down 2-0 early in the second period before they scored three straight goals. Cash Clarkson and Ethan Carnegie scored two goals in a matter of 20 seconds in the second period to send the game into the third period at two goals apiece.

In the third, Hayden Seib scored his 12th goal of the season just 59 seconds into the frame as the Rangers took a 3-2 lead. Addison McIntosh would tie up the game with just more than five minutes left as the game was destined for overtime.

In overtime and just 1:35 in, Cam Sarna struck in across the right wing and dropped it off for Boychuk, who did the rest as he played the role of hero from Swan River.

The Rangers now are tied for 10th place in the league with Yellowhead and they're heading into a two-game set with Interlake on Saturday and Sunday.
