They say when you get the taste of winning, you never want to lose again and that's how the Parkland U15 Rangers are feeling right now.

Now it's one thing to say it, but it's another to get the job done and that's what the Rangers are doing. The team is coming off a weekend sweep and they have now won four of their last five games which has seen them jump up the standings.

Starting the weekend in Carberry against a very good Southwest Cougars team, seven different skaters found the back of the net in a 7-4 win. Goals were scored by Carter Moncrief, Reese Scott, Noah Hanneson, Ben Poole, Dayson Martin, Brayden Budolowski, and Noah Smigelsky. Xander Perih was outstanding in net as he made 45 saves to record his third straight win.

It was the second time the Rangers beat the Cougars this year. Southwest has won 11 of their 17 games this season and sits in fifth place in the league.

Then on Sunday, it was the Kyle Pelletier show. Playing in his hometown of McCreary, Kyle turned away all 35 shots he faced in a 3-0 win against the Winnipeg Wild Green. Moncrief, Budolowski, and Martin all scored for the Rangers in the win.

Matt Kustra is in his first year of head coaching the program and he had this to say after the successful weekend.

"I'm extremely proud, these guys have been battling so hard this year," said Kustra. "After starting the season with nine losses in our first 11 games, you can see the guys are feeling a spark. I really do believe moving forward we're going to see an entirely new team, it's pretty exciting."

With wins in four of their last five games, the Rangers have used a combination of great offence which has been paired with great goaltending and defensive play. During their recent streak that has seen the team earn eight of a possible 10 points, the Rangers have scored 18 goals while giving up just 14.

"Both goalies in Xander and Kyle have been excellent as of late," said Kustra. "They are making the big saves in big moments to help us win games, I can't really ask for much more from them, it really gives the rest of our team a lot of confidence."

Parkland will continue their four-game homestand on Saturday when they play the Winnipeg Wild Gold in Russell at 12:30 and then they head back to McCreary to play the league-leading Wheat Kings on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. For fans in Dauphin wanting to watch the Rangers, you will have to wait until the team's final regular season game on February 11 when Eastman comes to town.

Brayden Budolowski continues to lead things offensively for the Rangers with 16 goals and 13 assists while Noah Smigelsky is second in team scoring with 21 points. Dayson Martin and Ben Poole have 17 points while Noah Hanneson has 14. Perih has now won four games in net while Pelletier has won a pair.

It's been a struggle for the Dauphin Kings as of late and those struggles continued on Sunday as they were beaten by the 13th place team in the league.

Wrapping up a weekend road trip and trying to salvage it, the Kings were unable to do so as they lost 4-3 to the Winnipeg Blues, who came into the game with four wins, compared to Dauphin's 15.

Rylan Gage opened the scoring for Dauphin in the game with his first of the year 7:11 in; however, the Blues would respond less than a minute later as Dawson Zeller scored a shorthanded goal.

Jordan Bax would restore Dauphin's lead as they led 2-1 after 20 minutes. Brody Green scored the lone goal of the second period to tie the game at two after 40 minutes.

Brycen Gair for Winnipeg and Jordan Bax for Dauphin would each score a goal before Lucas Desousa scored the game winner with just less than 10 minutes left in the game. Dauphin pushed late but they couldn't find the back of the net.

With the loss, Dauphin drops to 15-7-1 on the season and they're now five points back of Virden for first and the Blizzard are just a point back of Dauphin after they beat Virden on Sunday.

The Kings will welcome Virden to Dauphin on Tuesday night.

The Gilbert Plains Trojans varsity girls volleyball team has completed a three-peat.

For the third season in a row, the Trojans won a provincial title. Gilbert Plains came out of the gate firing as they won all four of their round-robin matches and lost just a single set in the process.

Then in the playoffs, Gilbert Plains kept firing on all cylinders. They first beat Baldur/Cartwright in straight sets and then beat Deloraine in a three-set thriller which saw them advance to the gold medal game.

In the gold medal game, Gilbert Plains hammered Glenboro, 25-10 and 25-20 to win the title.

Hailey Tabak was named the tournament's most valuable player while Montana Jubenvill and Brooke Hanke were named tournament all-stars.

The Dauphin Kings once again put together a pretty solid effort, but they earned no points to show for it.

Opening a weekend set in Winnipeg against the Steinbach Pistons, Dauphin dropped a 4-1 decision against the league-leading Pistons, who improved to 20-2-1 on the season.

The loss; meanwhile, drops the Kings to 15-6-1 on the season as they remain four points back of Virden for first place in the West Division, but Dauphin does still have two games in hand.

Brandon Funk scored the lone goal of the first period as his 13th of the season gave Steinbach a 1-0 lead. Dauphin would respond in the second as Jordan Bax finished a play for his eighth of the season. Gavin Nemis was the main reason for the goal as he had an overall outstanding game for the Kings.

That was it for Dauphin as Leo Chambers scored a pair of goals for Steinbach in the third and Connor Paronuzzi also scored for the Pistons in the three-goal win. Steinbach has now outscored Dauphin, 9-2, this season and the Pistons have scored seven times in the third period against Dauphin.

The Kings went 0-for-7 on the power play and they now only have two goals across their last 35 chances. The team will look to get back in the win column on Sunday when they remain in Winnipeg, but head to the Hockey For All Centre to play the Winnipeg Blues. Darnell Duff will have the pregame show at 7:15.

The Gilbert Plains Mustangs grade eight girls volleyball team is travelling back from Manitoba's capital with a provincial banner.

In Winnipeg for the provincial championships, the Mustangs proved that if you never give up, great things can happen. After placing second in their pool, Gilbert Plains played the top-ranked Holy Ghost team in the quarterfinals and the Mustangs came out on top.

After a dominating straight set victory against Ste. Agathe in their Final 4 match, the Mustangs were championship bound and what a comeback it was.

The Mustangs dropped the first set, 25-17, and they were down 12-2 in the second set. Gilbert Plains mounted an improbable comeback to win the second set 25-23 and in a nailbiting third set, the Mustangs won, 15-13, to win provincial gold.

The Dauphin Clippers varsity girls volleyball team entered the provincial championships as the fourth-ranked team in the province and they finished one spot higher than that this weekend.

Hosting the provincial AAA championships at Credit Union Place, Dauphin battled their way to a bronze medal on Saturday afternoon. In a tense third place match that went down to the wire, Dauphin downed Westgate in three sets, 17-25, 25-22, and 15-13.

The championship capped off a great season for the team which included winning a tournament just a couple of weeks ago at their home tournament.

The Parkland U18 Rangers most recent win just turns out to be their biggest win of the season.

On home ice this past Sunday against the previously 11-5 Winnipeg Thrashers, Quinten Fisk scored his sixth goal of the season with just 2:14 left in the third period as the Rangers downed the Thrashers, 5-4. The win improved Parkland's record to 7-9-2 and that now has them just a single point behind Eastman and Pembina Valley who are tied for seventh place.

As the season continues to roll on, the Rangers continue to prove that they can compete with anyone if they come to play, which they certainly did on Sunday.

"It's the way we played, guys are starting to recognize that we're able to beat top teams," said Tyler Carefoot. "I think many people are surprised with how we're able to stay in games, I believe we can skate with anyone in this league. When everyone buys in, we can accomplish great things."

As the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League hosts its best-on-best showcase this weekend at the Hockey for All Centre, that means Parkland gets the week off. That means they will not play again until next Saturday when they embark on a two-game trip in Manitoba's capital. Parkland will play the Bruins at Southdale on Saturday before heading to Gateway to play the Thrashers on Sunday.

That means the Rangers will not have played for 13 days between their biggest win of the season and their meeting on Saturday with the Bruins, which Carefoot believes isn't very beneficial.

"I think every coach and player wants to play meaningful games as much as possible," said Carefoot. "With that said, this time off from game action allows us a chance to sharpen our games in practice. We'll have a high tempo practice on Sunday."

Parkland will then practice on Tuesday and Thursday before heading to the city. Two players will hit the ice for a pair of games this weekend; however. Hayden Seib and Ethan McMullan are both heading to Winnipeg for the league's showcase as they will play on Team 2.

McMullan is in his first year with the Rangers and has turned out to be one of the team's most reliable defenders while Seib is hitting his stride offensively with 20 points in 19 games. The Parkland duo will play a game on Saturday and another one on Sunday in front of scouts from all levels of hockey including NCAA and the Western Hockey League.

"Seib has been a great Ranger for the last three years, he definitely deserves this opportunity to be a part of the showcase," ended Carefoot. "When it comes to McMullan, we're lucky to have him. From what I understand, him and his family are loving everything about this program and he's another player that is very deserving of this opportunity."

Carefoot also adds that he is disappointed that more Rangers weren't selected for the event, but he is very proud of Seib and McMullan. If you're looking to catch the Rangers at Credit Union Place, they will return home for a pair of games on December 16 and 17 against the Pembina Valley Hawks.

It was a mixed day for the Dauphin Clippers as the MHSAA varsity girls and boys 'AAA provincial championships opened inside Credit Union Place.

The girls team opened their tournament with a three-set loss to Westgate, 14-25, 25-14, and 12-15. Meanwhile, it was a perfect day for the boys team. They beat Stonewall in straight sets to open their tournament, 26-24 and 25-20, before beating R.D. Parker, 26-24 and 25-19.

The action continues Friday morning.

The Dauphin Clippers hockey team came up short on Thursday as they returned to tournament play at the Vic Inn tournament in Brandon.

Three different Clippers scored in a hard-fought 5-3 defeat to the Dryden Eagles. Tyron Sweetman, Norman Lacquette, and Jordan Height scored for Dauphin. It was a one-goal game late until Dryden sealed the game with an empty net goal.

The Clippers will now go up against the powerhouse Garden City Fighting Gophers on Friday morning.

Hannah Reagh was just three years old when she laced up a pair of skates for the first time, with some help thanks to her mom and dad.

From Binscarth, Hannah instantly fell in love with the game, and on many nights, she insisted on her parents taking her to the rink. It just so happened that the Reagh family would have to travel about a dozen minutes multiple nights a week as Hannah grew up playing in Foxwarren.

It was a challenge at times as numbers for the girls' program were very low, but Reagh was fortunate enough to stay busy as she played on the boys' team growing up. While a 12-minute drive is nothing over the top, doing so multiple times a week and for several years adds up and Hannah gives major props to her family for where she is today.

"I can't say enough about my parents, they have been here since day one, and they're my biggest supporters alongside my brother," said Reagh. "I'm so thankful to have them as my family, I wouldn't be where I am today without them, I know that."

Rising up the ranks over the years, Hannah is now in her fifth year with the Yellowhead Chiefs. A member of the eight-team Manitoba U18 AAA Female Hockey League, the Chiefs are joined by five other rural teams and a pair of teams from Winnipeg in the Ice and Avros.

After 13 games, Reagh is a big reason why the team has won eight of their 13 games so far as the 5'4" veteran from Binscarth is fourth in the league scoring with seven goals and 12 assists. Hannah has always had a knack for finding the open player and when the opportunity arises, finding the back of the net herself. Her teammates and coaches call her the 'spitfire' because of her work ethic and ability to take a game over.

With just less than two-thirds of the regular season left, Reagh is well on her way to recording a career-high in points. The Binscarth native had 38 points last year and 40 the previous season.

"I'm proud of myself and I'm proud of my teammates, they are a huge reason why I am achieving these milestones" offered Reagh. "I'm so thankful for my teammates and coaches, we have such a great group here in Yellowhead and I cherish every moment that I get to spend with them."

Hannah recently hit another milestone as she recorded her 100th career point with the U18 Chiefs and it took just 98 games to achieve the feat.

"It felt good to hit the milestone, it's always nice to produce and help the team win games," said Reagh. "With that said, it's all because of my teammates and coaching staff. I couldn't do it without them."

Reagh and the rest of Yellowhead will look to keep their winning ways going this weekend when they host Central Plains in Shoal Lake on Saturday and the Avros on Sunday. The Capitals have lost 12 of their 13 games while the Avros are right near the top of the league with wins in 10 of their 12 games.

West Coast Trip:

Hannah recently suited up for Team Manitoba as Dawson Creek, B.C. played host to the 2023 U-18 National Women's Hockey Championships. Featuring the top age-eligible players from coast to coast, it was the first time that Hannah played at such a prestigious event.

While the team did not win a gold medal, they did wrap up their event by scoring a pair of goals in the third period in a 2-1 nailbiting win against Team Atlantic in the seventh-place game. Now looking back at the week it was representing the province, Hannah will never forget about the experience.

"I was so thankful for that opportunity, who knew Dawson Creek was so beautiful," offered Reagh. "It was an incredible experience. The hockey was amazing as well and I made some lifelong friends, so I couldn't have asked for a better week with some great people and elite athletes."

Alberta Bound:

As Paul Brandt says, Hannah is now 'Alberta Bound'. The all-star forward recently signed her national letter of intent to play with the University of Calgary Dinos. A member of Canada West (USports), Reagh will go from playing her home games in Shoal Lake to playing in front of hundreds of home fans at the Father David Bauer Arena.406032354 1088089035655064 2589574810207071273 n

Hannah had plenty of interest in programs in the United States, but she ultimately decided staying in Canada and attending Calgary was what she wanted. Off the ice, she will be pursuing a career in the medical laboratory field.

Reagh does admit moving away from her family and leaving the Chiefs program will be a tough pill to swallow, but after years of hard work and dedication, the Binscarth all-star is ready to take the next step in her journey on and off the ice.

"I'm stoked, Calgary is such a beautiful city and I know how great of a program the Dinos' have," ended Reagh. "The coaches were so welcoming to me during the entire recruitment process. I couldn't have asked for a better place to sign and I can't wait to make the move to Calgary."

Cole Sheffield was sensational, the Dauphin Kings came up clutch offensively and as a result, they earned a 3-1 win against the Blizzard.

After going down by a goal, the Kings scored three straight in the victory as Sheffield finished with 25 saves and he also made a save on a penalty shot.

Anthony Bax led the way for Dauphin with a pair of goals while Cayden Glover also found the back of the net for Dauphin.

With the win, Dauphin is just a point back of Virden for first in the West Divison.
